The World Peace Temple founded and organized by Ven Bhikshu Jnanapurnik Mahasthavira, is one of the few Theravada Buddhist Temples in Kathmandu. It was established in year 1984 when a devotee generously donated a piece of land with a newly built small monastery. The main aim of setting up this temple was to strengthen the Theravada Buddhist education and meditation practices in Kathmandu and in the same time, made it a center for Buddhist studies and research. In Nepal, World Peace Temple is known as Vishwa Shanti Vihara.
In order to produce more educated and knowledgeable Sanghas for the propagation of Theravada Buddhism in Nepal, The Temple expanded and established a Buddhist School on March 1, 1997. World Peace Buddhist School covers formal learning programs with religion teachings of Pariyatti Shiksha and Pali language. There are more than 50 students presently.
The present scale of the temple complex began in year 1997. Most of the renovation and expansion fund were contributed through the generosity of many Malaysian and Singaporean devotees.
A smaller and simpler version of Swayambhu white stupa which is the symbol of Kathmandu, was built at the top floor.
In memory of the great supports from Malaysian Buddhists, a hall was named as The Malaysian Hall.
