Exploring The Deepest Gorge of Japan - Toyama

The vermillion-lacquered Okukane pedestrian bridge spans the main course of Kurobe River. It measured at a height of 34 meter connecting Keyakidaira Station to Babadani Onsen and Meiken Onsen. There are two ryokan with hot spring bathing farther up from the Bridge.

Okukane Bridge offers some breath-taking views at sight.

This way leads to the hot springs of Meiken and Babadani Onsen.

The path that stretched out from the pedestrian bridge is cut directly into the steep cliff. The craggy face is known as Hitokin Iwa which means people eating crag as it curves overhead as if a huge mouth swallowing up the people walking on the trail below.

Japan is one of the most safely concern country in the world. Places like Hitokin Iwa though is only few meters in distance, helmets are ready at the corner for people to wear when passing through its pathway to avoid the stones falling off from the cliff.

Babadani River squeezing within ranges rushing towards Kurobe River.

The lunar-like mini water falls created by the exciting Babadani flow is gorgeous.

The Falls of Babadani River formed a mysterious screen, as if to protect a spiritual site.

The emerald flow of Babadani River beautifully garnished the bright mountain ranges on its way to meet Kurobe River at the down stream.

The entrance mouth of those small walking tunnels built on the trail ascending up to Babadani Onsen.

Encounter splendid foliage of Meiken mountain ranges(1906 meters) while tracking on the mountain trail.

Ranges that are tinted in bright orange and red are magnificent.

Mt Hyakkan (1969 meter)and nearby ranges are covered with snow.

The beautiful view of towering mountains with snow capped peaks, seen from the trail.

Kurobe River originates in Washibatake Mountain (2924 meter)in central part of Japan Northern Alps, runs between the two ranges of Tateyama and Ushirotateyama.

The rushing water flows through steep cliffs of Kurobe Gorge.

When flows of river rushes against the cliffs, it creates a wonderful spectacular.

A 30 minutes walk along the river towards the lower reaches of the stream is the greatest scenic spot of Sarutobikyo Gorge ( Monkey Flying Valley) which is the narrowest part of the river where monkeys can easily jump over from one bank to the other.

Passing across these cliff hanging tunnels towards Monkey Jumping Valley are really interesting. You could not see faces of people who are after you and in front of you. Inside are wet, dark, narrow and mysterious but fun.

Let's go to experience walking through these mysterious tunnels.

Views from the small look outs of the cliff tunnels.

Building of Keyakidaira Station and Okukane Bridge viewed from Ashiyu Foot Bath.

Ashiyu is a sheltered foot bath lying along Kurobe river below Okukane Bridge. I joined in with dozens of people, seated at the platform, soaking the pair of tired feet inside the warm pool while admiring the beautiful scenery of the running river below and nice views of the bridge above.

The rooftop observation platform of Keyakidaira station, are usually packed with people in noon. They came up to enjoy the beautiful scenery while at the same time, have their Bento lunch freely under the open air.

Keyakidaira lies 600 meter above sea level, is the terminal Station of Kurobe Rail.
