A Marvelous Display of Fall Foliage - Tofuku-ji, South Kyoto

Temple Tofuku-ji is one of the most scenic spots to view fall foliage in Kyoto City. The view from Tsutenkyo Bridge that spans a valley of lush maples is a spectacular sight in fall season. Vibrant reds and luscious greens lightened up the whole temple grounds and surroundings. The 100 meters long covered walkway of Tsutenkyo Bridge becomes extremely crowded when colors reach its peak and people has to fight for a space on the walkway. The impressive colorful leaves at Sengyokukan Valley attract thousands and thousands of people from all over Japan and abroad in every autumn. They flock in just to enjoy the celebrated sight of the unrivaled foliage colors that surround the spiritual Zen haven.

Sengyokukan Valley is a famous place for cherry blossom in the past but in view of its attraction to the nature admirers who might distract and disturb the studies and practices of the monks, the artist Priest Shuho Myocho (1282-1337) prayed for all the trees to cut down. Beyond his expectation, the valley today with abundant autumn leaves still bring attention to millions of nature lovers.

When colors reach their peak one week later, the walkway of Tsutenkyo Bridge would be packed with foliage admirers who are expected to squeeze with many others under the narrow roof. They definitely cannot be like us now, moving freely along the corridors and terraces.

The maple trees at Sengyokukan Valley though were not completely turned into vibrant colors, it is still a marvelous sight.

Looking across the valley to its Gaunkyo Bridge at the other end.

A sea of woven hue!

The 2000 maple trees at Sengyokukan valley that change to characteristic gold color in fall season, were said to be brought back from China by its founding abbot Master Enni Benen (1202-1280). He was a Tendai monk studying Mahayana Buddhist Teachings in China before assigned to establish Tofuku-ji Temple.

Taking our own sweet time to capture the beautiful sight of a lush maple trees that just began to change colors.

I was in a framed picture! Awesome!

The entire view near Tsutenkyo Bridge was filled with attractive red leaves in fall.

Vast grounds with colorful fall foliage are a sight that every body loves to admire.

Strolling deep into the valley and explore a world of colors offered from the nature.

An astounding scene!

The brilliant colors started to get the moss garden shaded.

I stood at the vintage point of Tsutenkyo Bridge, viewing the colorful foliage that had completely blanket up the whole ravine. There was nobody fighting with me for space. This was a right time to possess the whole bridge all to myself.

The little unknown red pavilion in the garden looks gorgeous.
