A Moon Crossing Bridge - Arishiyama

Arashiyama is a district at the rural area of western Kyoto City. The name also refers to the mountain that stretches across the Oi River. The most iconic landmark in Arshiyama District is the 250 meters long Togetsukyo Bridge that cross over Hozu River. Togetsukyo Bridge is commonly addressed as Moon Crossing Bridge. It was said that when the Emperor, in one dark night, saw a full moon as if crossing the river, was highly impressed and named the bridge over it with this romantic name. The bridge has a history of more than 1000 years since it was first built in Heian period (794-1185).

The romantic Togetsu Bridge is in fame for views of cherry blossom and fall foliage since it was constructed. The present bridge was restored in concrete in year 1934. Local Government thinks that it perhaps would look more harmonizing with the surrounding landscape if its external facades and hand rails are replaced with wood and they may change it to that in the coming repairing work.

There are various kinds of boats and yachts on the river. The ancient colorful dragon head yachts are most attractive.

The scenic village of Kiyotake Hamlet at the foot of Otago Mountain is home to many famous Shinto and Shrines.

Arashiyama is not only designated as a national historical site but is also a place of natural scenic beauty.

Within the 8th century, Arashiyama was a site where novelties and royals came to boating while admiring the foliage. People of today share the aristocratic interest of the past.

Boating is the most enjoyable and exciting activity on the fast flowing rapids.

The vast Hozu River never runs short of water.

Hozu River is the downstream of Katsura River in Kyoto. The name changes from Katsura to Hozu when it flows further away from the city.

Have a pleasurable walk on the bridge or allow the Japanese young man to bring you over the bridge in his rickshaw!

Double canoeing creates romance.

Otago Mountain

Mountain ranges are the natural backdrop of Arashiyama District.

Peacefully strolling and immersing in the serene atmosphere along the river bank.

The reflection of ranges on the surface of water forms a breath-taking scenery.

Views of mountainous scenic sight

The famous Iwatayama Monkey Park at the slope of Arashiyama Mountain is home to 170 Macaque monkeys.

We came one week earlier before the season is at its peak just to avoid the crowds, and our luck was not too bad, we had this magnificent sight of Arashiyama foliage spectacular extending right in front of us.

The entire Arashiyama ranges are expected to be shaded into brilliant red in one week's time.

Nakanoshina Koen park at the midpoint of Hozu river was packed with people though the peak of foliage has a week to come.

The living quarters

The creative little souvenir stalls attracts crowds of people in its peak seasons.

The bean curd skin Yuba is the local delicacy in Arishiyama and it is usually made in front of the shops.

We had a satisfactory Yuba (Tofu) cuisine as dinner at Arishiyama.

All dishes were made from the bean curd skin produced on spot in front of the restaurants. Chawanmushi egg pudding is also made from soya milk.

The interesting deserts that included inside the set meal chargeable at about 3000 yen per person.
