Lake Phewa - Pohkara

Phewa Lake, with an area of 5.23sq.km and an average depth of 8.6 meters, is the largest fresh water lake in Gandaki Zone and the 2nd biggest in its nation. It locates in the south of Pokhara Valley, about 28 km away from Annapurna Ranges.

A photogenic sight of Phewa Lake.

It is the main attraction of the tourists at this part of Pokhara.

There are quite a number of Tibetan women stationed by the side of Phewa Lake, selling hand-made jewellery or local gem stones to earn a living.

Colorful little boats are used as transportation as well as for leisure to guests who likes to experience a serene moment and enjoy the enchanting scenery of  Phewa Lake.

Boating on Phewa Lake

Water of Phewa Lake is diverted for irrigation into southern valley and used for hydro-power plant set up 100 meter below at the bottom of Phusre Khola Gorge, 1.5km away from southern part of the lake.

Some parts of Phewa Lake are also applied for commercial cage fisheries.

On the little island in the center of Phewa Lake, there is an old Hindu Temple named Taal Barahi. It is a two storey pagoda dedicated to the boar manifestation of Ajima, the protester deity that represents female force Shakti. Devotees used to come and sacrifice the deity with male animals and fowls in week ends.

The crystal water of Phewa lake is as clear as a glass mirror.

The World Peace Japanese Pagoda high up on the hill overlooking Phewa Lake, is definitely a perfect watch point to have a panoramic view of the Lake with mountain ranges.
